Palm Weevil Treatment Protocol
- A list of all necessary supplies for treatment sites – complete unit setup.
- The engineer visually inspects the infected trees using either eyes or smart devices and marks their infection.
- Drill the trunk of the tree to a depth of 30-40 cm.
- Inject infected trees through the drilled holes with material like Rogor, General, or Dursban at a rate of (1.5-2) cm / liter. Place marks on the holes and fill them with grease.
- Spray all tree trunks with insecticides 7 days after treatment using brushes, focusing on washing the trunks.
- Re-inspect the trees after 10-15 days using a detection device and mark those that haven’t healed.
- Re-inject infected trees with insecticides or phosphorus tablets, and mark them with a different color.
- Wrap the tree with plastic wrap at least 140 cm high and securely seal it.
- Conduct inspections with the device every 4 months for all trees, especially those younger than 10 years, and re-treat infected trees using the same steps.
- Each treatment unit operates with two workers, and they can treat between 15-20 trees in 7 hours of work.
- It’s preferable to add soil around the trunks to prevent weevils and facilitate the process, especially in trees that are 70-100 cm tall.
- Trees can be treated with irrigation networks using sticky material like Rogor or alternatives like (General, Kodkod, Kohnor, Confidor) twice a year at a minimum, with a rate of 20-30 cm per tree. This has an effect on the weevils, especially when the treatment reaches the roots of the trees through irrigation water.
Costs: The palm weevil treatment process costs around 15 shekels for labor per tree treated and verified for infection, according to steps (2,3,4,5,6) in this protocol. Additional costs include transportation, treatments, device inspection, wrapping the trunk if needed, and cleaning offshoots if required. The total cost for a treatment unit in the farm is approximately 25 shekels per tree, making the total cost for treated trees around 50 shekels, and the cost of confirming infection-free trees about 10 shekels at a minimum.
- Note: The cost per tree depends on the number of trees, distance, tree height, and tree cleanliness.
